How to Hang Drapes for Lasting Impression

Posted by John Dawkins on 27th Feb 2019

The act of hanging drapes seem like a very straightforward process. But experts suggest that there is a right (and wrong) way to do it – that is, if you want to maximize the styling impact of your drapery fabric. You spent a great deal of time and money in choosing the right drapes to use for various rooms in the house. But all that could put into waste when you do not know the proper way to hang drapes.

Let the Light In

While the blackout curtains are great for bedroom, the main rule to follow when hanging drapes is to let a certain amount of sunlight in. This is why sheer fabrics are the most classic choices for curtains because it creates a natural breezy look for any room. It also helps to brighten up a room when the light is able to penetrate the fabric.

Choosing the Ideal Height of Rod Placement

The placement of the curtain rods is also another important aspect of designing your home interior with drapery. It is also the trickiest part that you need to master. There are numerous factors to take into account such as the type of window covering, height of the ceiling, and the style of window.

If you are using standard drapes that hang on opposing sides of the window, you need to place the rod between the ceiling and the window case. This is recommended if there is more than 12-inches difference between these two. If you have cathedral ceilings, the curtain rod should be placed 4-6 inches above the window trim.

It does not matter what the ceiling height of your home or room is, you should have at least 2 inches difference in the space of your curtain rod to the window casing. This trick will help to create the illusion of height, such that it would seem like the ceiling is taller.

Consider the Width

You can also make your windows look wider with the right curtain rod placement. There should be a distance of 4 to 10 inches from the edge of the window casing to the end of your curtain rod. There is also a practical reason why you need to have your curtain rod extend farther from the edge of your window case. This is so that you can open your drapes during the day to allow natural light into the room. If your curtain rod is not wide enough, you won’t be able to open your drapes as wide.

The Right Size of Drapery

Another factor that can impact how you hang drapes for lasting impression is the size of the drapery itself. You need to consider the size, length, and width of the drapery within the context of your space. If you can, purchase your own drapery fabric and have the sizing custom-made to match the available space in your home.

For dramatic impression, your drapes should just kiss the floor. This will help to create the illusion of height in the room. But you have to consider that different types of fabric hang differently. Take this into account when determining what type of fabric to use to create the desired effect.
